On the 12th of November 2010, the law implementing the directive from the European Parliament and Council on Energy Efficiency and Energy Services entered into force. This means that Germany has implemented the EU Energy Services Directive in full operation. The law obliges energy providers to educate their customers about available opportunities to save electricity.
The newly implemented law consists of a systematic procedure to identify and quantify energy saving opportunities. According to the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Rainer Brüderle, the market should be active in developing energy services to their clients and this can be achieved through better education of consumers and creating more transparency when it comes to consumer-provider transactions.
